Comenius Assistant 2010-2011: Jessica Wood

After two great experiences with Comenius Assistants Fatma Narman, from Turkey, and Caterina Binetti, from Italy, it is now time to welcome our new Comenius Assistant, Jessica Wood.

Jessica is a student from the UK. She attends Oxford University where she studies Portuguese and Spanish. In the future, she would like to be a teacher.

She is going to be in our school until December so, if you see her, don't forget to say "Hi!" and welcome her!

WORLD WIDE WEB OF ENGLISH

The Internet was created back in the 1960s. Initially designed for military research use, it has since then grown enormously and its popularity seems to be never-ending.

It hasn't always been so, but nowadays the Internet, especially since the invention of the World Wide Web, allows for the use of practically all forms of distant communication at the click of a button. Even so, there is still a lot of room for evolution so that it can be used more easily by more people on the planet.

English has always been the most widely used language on the Internet. This is no surprise, if you remember that it was created and developed in an English-speaking country. Although there are hundreds of millions of pages in the World Wide Web in dozens of languages, more than half of these pages are written in English.

Nowadays teenagers all over the world visit many chat rooms. Some of them have had bad experiencies, that's why they advise us to follow these basic rules when we visit a chat room:

1. Don't reveal your name, address or telephone number.
2. Don't arrange a meeting with anyone without telling your family.
3. Don't go to those meetings alone. The person at the other end may not be who or what he/she says he/she is.
4. Don't believe everything you are told. Use common sense and a sense of measure and play it safe.
5. Don't accept e-mails from strangers, as they may contain viruses.
6. Turn off the computer if you feel uncomfortable.
